Aunt Lou here.

I love making mashed potatoes in my crock pot….but I hate boiling them beforehand. As you know, I am the slowest recipe prepper. I try, I really do, but for some reason, it always seems to take me longer to get everything ready for a recipe than it would the average person. Honestly, this is a sore spot for me. I love being efficient. It makes me happy. The flip side is that it is frustrating to me when I don’t feel efficient. So when Jackie S., one of our readers, shared with us this great post from Spend with Pennieswhere Holly makes mashed potatoes in her crock potwithout boiling them first, I couldn’t wait to try that technique with our Creamy Crock Pot Mashed Potatoes!

  • ½cupto 3/4 buttersoftened and sliced
  • salt and pepper to taste

How to Make Mashed Potatoes in a Crock Pot

  1. Peel (if desired) and cube up your potatoes and place them in your crock pot

  2. Pour chicken broth over all your potatoes

  3. Cover and cook on high for 2-4 hours or low for 4-8 hours, they are ready to be mashed when they are fork tender

  5. Return to crock pot to keep warm until serving

Slow Cooker No Boil Mashed Potatoes Notes:

  • As with regular boiling of potatoes, the smaller you cut them the faster they will cook up. So if you need the longer cook time, cut your potatoes up into bigger cubes. Do you only have a couple hours? Cut your potatoes into smaller, thinner cubes. Just make sure you adjust your cooking time accordingly.
  • Make sure you watch this closely the first time you make it in your crock pot. I know we say this all the time, but we really can’t stress this enough. A good recipe can go really wrong if it is under or overcooked. Each crock pot cooks so differently, and, as I said above, the size of the cubes you cut your potatoes can greatly affect your cooking time.
  • I used good ol’ Cera for this recipe. Cera is my6 Quart Crock Pot with Ceramic Coated Pot. I love the easy cleanup, and 6-quarts was perfect size for 5 lbs of potatoes. So you can use your favorite 5-6 quart slow cooker.
  • This recipe makes a ton of mashed potatoes…and they are yummy, so this would be perfect for a pitch-in (what us Southern Hoosiers call potlucks) or cut it in half if you don’t need so many. However, if you cut it in half, use a smaller crock pot and watch your time!
  • As with any of our recipes, calorie counts and nutritional information varies greatly depending on which products you choose to use when cooking this dish.

Can you peel the potatoes the day before, then place them on the slow cooker in the morning so they can be ready to mash when you get home from work?

      Hi Cindy!

I haven’t tried it with this recipe yet, but if you want to try it, here is what I would recommend…If you want to peel them the night before, submerge them in water and refrigerate them to keep them from turning brown. If you are also cutting them up the night before, just don’t cut the potatoes into small pieces.

If you give it a try, let me know how it goes! Enjoy!

FAQs

How to make mashed potatoes without boiling potatoes? ›

Rinse the peeled potato chunks and put them in a large microwave-safe bowl or a casserole dish. Cover the dish or bowl with plastic wrap and cut a small vent in the top for steam to escape. Microwave on high for 9 to 12 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and can be gently poked through with a fork.

How do you keep mashed potatoes creamy in a crock pot? ›

You'll need extra butter and cream, along with your finished mashed potatoes. Butter the slow cooker and add extra cream. Butter the insert of the slow cooker. Drizzle a small amount of cream in the bottom.

How long does it take for potatoes to get soft in a crockpot on high? ›

To a 6-quart slow cooker, add the potatoes, olive oil, garlic, and salt, stirring to combine. Cover and cook until the potatoes are tender, about 3 to 4 hours on high, or 5 to 6 hours on low.

How long can mashed potatoes stay in the crock pot? ›

Seal the crock pot with the lid and turn it on to the "Warm" setting. Keep warm for up to two hours. If your mashed potatoes recipe uses more milk or cream to make them more "soupy", the crockpot method won't work well because it will actually break down the potatoes.

Can potatoes be cooked without boiling? ›

Perfect roasted potatoes every time! No boiling required, 1 pan, 30 minutes, perfectly crisp edges, and tender inside. The ultimate brunch side!

Is it better to bake or boil potatoes for mashing? ›

Boiling potatoes can leave them waterlogged, diluting their earthy subtle sweetness, but steaming them preserves their inherent flavor. As the potatoes soften, they absorb just the right amount of moisture. Seasoning the dish only at the very end heightens their intrinsic subtle sweetness.

How do you keep mashed potatoes from burning in a crock pot? ›

The low setting is usually best for mashed potatoes, but all slow cookers cook differently and at different temperatures, so if yours doesn't get very hot, you may have to turn it on high. If your crock pot tends to cook on the hot side, you may need to put it on the “keep warm” setting.

Why add butter before milk in mashed potatoes? ›

Adding the butter first helps to coat the starch in the potato, resulting in a creamier potato. Once the butter is absorbed; add the rest of the dairy.

How do you make potatoes less creamy? ›

Whisk a little cornstarch into the warm potatoes, only a teaspoon at a time, until the potatoes thicken to your liking. The potatoes must be warm. You can also use tapioca starch or potato starch, although most cooks are less likely to have those products on hand.

Will potatoes go mushy in a slow cooker? ›

Yes, it's possible to overcook potatoes in a crockpot. They can become mushy and lose their texture if left for too long. It's advisable to follow a recipe's recommended cooking time to achieve the desired consistency.

When to add potatoes to slow cooker on low? ›

Tender vegetables such as zucchini and beans can be added to your dish in last ¾ - 1 hour of cooking when cooking on High, or 2 hours if cooking on Low. Hard, starchy vegetables like potato and carrots are best added around 3 hours before the meal is done if cooking on High, and 4 hours on Low.

Do potatoes need to be submerged in a slow cooker? ›

Nope! Some people soak their sliced potatoes in cold water to remove some of the starch, but that is fully unrelated to cooking them. Slow cooker potatoes do not need to be submerged to cook.

How do you keep mashed potatoes warm for a crowd? ›

"Hold your mashed potatoes in a bain-marie, or water bath, with a lid on top [and] they stay for hours — days really," Ray, who recently partnered with Home Chef, said in an interview with Allrecipes. The method is oh-so-simple.

How do restaurants keep mashed potatoes fresh? ›

Restaurants prepare the potatoes ahead by boiling and mashing just the potato, then just before serving, it is mixed into boiling cream (or milk or even broth or a combination thereof) to reheat it and make it nice and creamy.

What happens if you fry potatoes without boiling them? ›

Do I need to boil my potatoes first? Trust us: You seriously don't need to boil these spuds (or pre-cook them at all) before pan-frying. Slicing them thin allows them to cook through in the same amount of time that they need to get brown and crispy on the outside.

Can you boil potatoes in the microwave? ›

Place the cut potatoes in a microwave-safe bowl. Add enough water to cover the potatoes and a dash of salt. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap, poking holes in the wrap to vent. Microwave on high for 5 minutes.

Can I cook potatoes in the microwave? ›

Step 1Wash potato thoroughly and pat completely dry. Pierce 3 to 4 times with a fork. Step 2Place potato on microwave-safe plate and microwave 7 minutes, turning over halfway through cooking. If your potato isn't fork-tender after 7 minutes, continue microwaving in 1 minute increments until fully cooked.

How long can potatoes sit in water before boiling for mashed potatoes? ›

How long can peeled and cut potatoes sit in water before cooking, before they begin taking on too much water? A: We usually recommend no more than 24 hours.
